Latest News on the EPA Lead Paint Rule

RRP Predictions: Dazed and Confused at Home and in the Lumberyard

It’s not looking good. Less than a month before its implementation, the majority of remodeling contractors still don’t even know about EPA’s Lead: Renovation, Repair, and Painting rule. Of those who have gotten the required training, very few have a real understanding of how the new rule will affect their business practices. I can count on one hand the remodelers I know who have actually read the full 79 pages of the rule, including the amendments and the preamble, without which they’ll have little context for interpreting the rule.

 And less than 10% of remodelers that have applied for firm certification have received the required documentation from EPA.

 Word is that EPA will begin a public awareness campaign about the RRP sometime in April. Once consumers and remodelers become aware of it, hysteria and confusion will begin. As with the Cash for Clunkers program, the government will become quickly overwhelmed with firm applications as well as inquiries from contractors and consumers.

 With that in mind, here are some predictions about two core audiences likely to impact remodelers’ ability to continue to work (legally) going forward:
