Robert Frost wrote that “good fences make good neighbors.” While that statement may or may not be true, it is true that the right fence can make a good house look great.

Fencing options are numerous and there is a style for every type of home, but for a truly unique statement, wrought iron fencing can’t be beat.

Wrought iron fences and gates have a long heritage of providing security, while adding visual enhancement to a home and lawn. When a homeowner desires a sophisticated look, a wrought iron fence and gates are an ideal option.

In the 19th century, decorative iron fences where very popular as they provided both elegance and utility, qualities that appealed during the Victorian age. Homeowners of that age wanted style and strength, and found both in iron fencing. The iron fences, gates and decorative pieces outlasted wood by generations and required very little maintenance. An added bonus was the fact it was available in what seemed like a limitless number of design choices.

Those same qualities that made iron fencing popular with the Victorians still hold true today. An iron fence will stand up to the elements and require very little upkeep.

As a security fence, it is hard to find anything that provides the level of security that iron fences do and still manage to look spectacular.

One of the best features of a wrought iron fence is its ability to provide security without compromising the view. Manicured lawns and elaborate gardens can still be seen and enjoyed by others if a homeowner has an iron fence.

Iron fences are often high enough to keep intruders out, and sharp post caps can be added to discourage anyone from scaling the fence.

Choosing a wrought iron fence does not limit design choices. While some manufacturers offer the standard colors of black and white, some also offer brown, green or bronze as color options. A fence can even be painted to match a home.

There are many ways to customize an iron fence. Pickets can be twisted, swooped or arching, according to placement. Decorative elements include finials, caps, rails, rings and scrolls. Wrought iron gates can be fitted with key locks or an automated system.

An experienced designer can even take some of the same decorative elements used to customize the fence and show a homeowner how to use those on the exterior of the home. Scrollwork used on the fence can be formed as an accent piece to go over the front door and finials can be used on porch railings.

Today, as less expensive, and sometimes less durable, fencing options are introduced to the market, a wrought iron fence provides a lasting and unique way to frame and protect a home.
